► 2015/2016 Academic School Year launched
Pupils and students in Cameroon today September 7, 2015 began classes for the new academic year 2015/2016. The Minister for Secondary Education Louis Bapes Bapes has today launched the new school year in Yaoundé while the Minister for Basic Education Youssouf Hadidja Alim did same in Maroua in the Far North Region. Measures have been taken by all major stake holders of the education community to ensure that the 2015/2016 academic year kicks off smoothly.

► Cameroon, FAO signs two partnership agreements
Cameroon and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have reinforced bilateral ties by signing two agreements on Friday September 4, 2015 in Yaounde. The first accord signed between Cameroon’s Minister for External Relations, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo and the FAO Director General, José Graziano da Silva focused on the expanded liaison office of the FAO for Central Africa in Yaoundé while the second was on creating a $20 million five-year partnership programme signed between the FAO Director General and the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Essimi Menye. The partnership programme aims at promoting agricultural development in Cameroon. José Graziano da Silva left Cameroon on Saturday September 5, 2015 after a three day working visit on the invitation of President Paul Biya.
► Prisons receive 17 new vehicles
Within the context of the fight against Boko Haram in Cameroon, officials of the Penitentiary Administration have handed over some 17 brand new vehicles to eight prisons in the Far North, North, Centre and Littoral regions. The vehicles were handed to the Maroua, Kousseri, Yagoua, Tchollire, Yoko, Yaoundé and Douala prisons by the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice in charge of Penitentiary Administration, Doh Jerome Penbaga in two separate ceremonies on Friday September 4, in Yaoundé.

► Colonel commits suicide
Colonel Eyong Ebot committed suicide on Thursday September 3, 2015 in Bamenda.
At the time of the act, he was in his office in Bamenda. According to military sources, the colonel arrived at the military sector as usual on the fateful day, shortly after a shot was heard in his office, soldiers rushed into his office and met him in a pool of blood with his head blown off and a gun pointing to his head. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently being investigated. 57 years old, Colonel Eyong Tambong Ebot was Head of the 22nd Battalion since March 14, 2015.

► BEAC withdraws new bank notes
The Bank for Central African States (BEAC) has withdrawn from circulation new bank notes (500, 1000 and 2000FCFA) that had been in circulation for the past eight months. According to BEAC officials the new bank notes were of poor quality, faded out fast and generally created the impression they were fake bank notes. The Governor of BEAC has further announced that new 500, 1000 and 2000 bank notes of better quality will be launched in the forthcoming weeks nationwide.

► Nigerian reinstates 3,032 soldiers
More than 3,000 soldiers who were dismissed from the Nigerian army for alleged indiscipline in the ongoing war with Boko Haram Islamic extremists in the northeast of the country have been reinstated. A panel set up to review the cases recommended reinstatement of 3,032 soldiers out of the 5,000 cases that were reviewed. The soldiers’ reinstatement comes three months after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has vowed to crush the Boko Haram Islamic uprising.

► Al Shabaab militants re-take Somali town from African Union
Al Shabaab took control of a populous town in Central Somalia on Sunday after African Union forces left the area, the third town the Islamist insurgents have seized since Friday. The group, which seeks to overthrow the Western-backed government and impose its strict version of Islamic law, has remained a potent threat in Somali after it was forced from the capital Mogadishu in 2011.

► Sierra Leone village in quarantine after Ebola death
Nearly 1,000 people in Sierra Leone have been put under quarantine following the death of a 67-year-old woman who tested positive for Ebola. It comes five days into a six-week countdown for the country to be officially declared Ebola-free. The quarantine will last for three weeks, provided no new cases are recorded.
